Review:
This Masai tale about a childless lioness who steals Mother Ostrich's four chicks and tries to pass them off as her own echoes with authentic African sounds - "tuk-pik, tuk-pik, tuk-pik." We hear the ostrich family move and see Yumi Heo's pictures dancing rhythmic beats. Her style is an inspired fusion of tribal art, the abstractions of such modernists as Klee and Miro, and the slightly off-kilter energy of Lane Smith. The result is unique. (Oh, and Mother Ostrich does, with the help of a trickster mongoose, get her children back).
