After his wife dies, Grandpap comes to live in Moon, Texas with his extended family. There he up and buys a bright green used Cadillac. His eleven-year-old granddaughter Jaynell moves in with her younger sister, Racine, to give Grandpap a room. She rides around with him in the "new" car as much as possible. Racine, who wants to take dancing lessons the family can't afford, would rather turn on the radio and headlights of the Cadillac after dark and dance.

The story explores family issues, loss, jealousy and redemptive kindness in a hilarious, sad, moving page-turner. Told in the first person by Jaynell, the characters in her orbit spring to life.
