Review:
At the turn of the century, waves of immigrants from persecution in Eastern Europe came to America to find a better life. A moving, old-fashioned story about a 13-year-old girl who makes that journey, works hard, and is able, eventually, to bring her grandmother here. She also finds romance with a young shoemaker she met on the ship that carried them to America. It is, however, artist P.J. Lynch's large, deeply-felt paintings that breathe life into the immigrant experience. He captures the hope and fear in the faces of new arrivals, the flavor of the teeming streets on the Lower East Side, and the look of New York in 1900 or there-abouts. Each of his characters is palpably real and lends credence to the author's words. It is a seamless and complementary partnership.
