Review:
One of World War II's shining moments is believably replayed in Louise Borden's moving story of a plucky young girl from Deal, on the Kent coast of England; her fisherman father and their sturdy fishing smack, the Lucy. Together, they join the rag-bag fleet of small boats that set sail across the English Channel to rescue the French and English troops marooned on the beaches at Dunkirk by the advancing German army. In vibrant paintings, many of them worthy of Winslow Homer, artist Michael Foreman puts us smack in the middle of the action-dive-bombing Stukas, exhausted and wounded troops. Even pet parakeets and dogs take part. History springs to life in this memorable collaboration, and we are right there.
