Review:
The stories Arthur Yorinks tells are always quirkily original, and this tale about Lulu, a little girl who knows what she wants, and Harry, the stuffed toy red poodle (who happens to be exactly what Lulu DOESN'T want) is one of the author's best. Lulu is furious when her parents refuse to get her a "real dog" and hand her Harry instead. "She threw poor stuffed Harry onto the floor and kicked him and stamped her feet and banged the wall and slammed the door. Whew!" It's not a promising beginning to a friendship, but Harry is not your ordinary stuffed animal:he speaks English, loves bagels and takes Lulu on an overnight trip to Paris. Even better, he is willing to forgive and forget, and the irascible Lulu is transformed by Harry's unconditional love. Martin Matje's pictures, deft and action-packed, give us the world as it is seen by a child: adults are oversized and depicted only from the shoulders down. Artist and author, small heroine and her plucky pet hero, both partenships work beautifully. Kids will like this odd-ball little drama.
