Review:
Veteran author Mary Stolz's latest heroine is surely destined to become the Miss Marple of catdom. The time is 1912, the place is Boston, and the feline private investigator is Eileen O'Kelly, a liberated pussycat who revels in being "the only female" detective in Bean Town. Like an earlier English counterpart, Sherlock Holmes, she has decided to share a selection of her most intriguing cases in order to earn some money (a novice sleuth's lot is,alas, not a lucrative one). Thus we meet Mr. Herbie whose General Dry Goods and Grocery Store is suffering a constantly diminishing stock of lox; Smokey Jack Slattery, a superstitious southpaw pitcher who has lost his lucky baseball; and Miss Clara Ramsey, a beautiful calico cat, whose sister has been murdered. Feisty, fearless and no one's fool, detective O'Kelly makes a compelling narrator, and readers 8-11 are likely to clamor for more than the six cases here solved so handily. Pamela Levy's black-and-white illustrations capture the period setting and the spirit of Ms. Stolz's winning volume. A good choice for lighthearted reading.
