Review:
Three cheers for Shana Corey who has, with light-hearted prose and clear-headed intent, told the story of a pioneering 19th century suffragette, Amelia Bloomer. Though not as well-known as Elizabeth Cady Stanton or Susan B. Anthony, Amelia started her own newspaper, "The Lily," and fought to free the women of her day from Victorian strictures as to what did and did not constitute "a proper lady.” Best known for her efforts to reform the dress code—which dictated that women wear layer upon layer of petticoats under full skirts that often required 20-30 yards of material—Amelia Bloomer championed the wearing of pantaloons under shorter, far simpler dresses, a costume that soon gave the name "Bloomers" to its chief feature. Amelia never stopped working for women's rights, and this breezy, factual account of her life and work should appeal to a wide audience.
