Review:
With a tongue-in-cheek irreverence that is rarely associated with Baroque music and the monumental works of George Frideric Handel in particular, this charming picture book tells the story of the life of one of the greatest composers of all time. As the title suggests, Handel is portrayed as someone of indomitable spirit who never strayed from his calling, whether he was smuggling a clavichord up to his parent's attic (to learn to play the keyboard instrument over his father's objections) or bucking the popular trend by writing oratorios instead of operas. This is musical biography with a moral: stay true to one's self. The illustrations of people in wigs and waistcoats have a contemporary quality that will appeal to children. This is Handel-lite, but Handel-right.
