On the timely topic of medical ethics, the play "Frankenstein" is presented by the Stage One theater group from Louisville, Kentucky. Based accurately on the novel by Shelley, this remarkable piece is compelling and seamless. The main characters are superb in their portrayal, especially Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, who make the production "come alive." Obsession, insanity, the need for power - all is evident in the voice and face of the young doctor. The monster, a true innocent, wants only to bond with his creator. When Frankenstein cannot face what he has wrought, the monster goes berserk and kills some of those closest to the young man. The monster's scientific creation is done expertly, just enough visual surgery to create horror, but not enough to create disgust. One cannot help but feel sorry for the poor monster - he does not understand because he was given no ability to understand. Post-play discussion is inevitable. Sets, costumes, and especially creative lighting convey the drama of the situation. Globalstage has chosen well in offering this theater production for family viewing.
