Review:
This selection of 21 of poet Emily Dickinson's 1,775 poems (discovered by her sister Lavinia after Emily died) is accompanied by tasteful, if subdued paintings inspired by the works chosen. There are familiar offerings ("There is no Frigate like a Book" and "I'm Nobody! Who are You?"), and unfamiliar surprises like "The Moon was but a Chin of Gold/ A Night or two ago-". But there are editorial decisions that seem wrong-headed: i.e. leaving out the powerful second stanza of Emily's poem "I never saw a Moor-I never saw the Sea." Is an audience of children to be sheltered from such images as "I never spoke with God/ Nor visited in Heaven"? And if so, why? Yet, overall, this is a thoughtful introduction to Dickinson's poetry -- her "letter to the World..."
