Review:It's an old, sensible educational theory that by steeping children in beauty we may develop in them an aesthetical sense. Micklethwait's strategy is, in the guise of an alphabet book, to present children with twenty-six splendidly reproduced museum paintings ranging from Magritte to Vermeer (but only one in a non-Western tradition). The child somewhat irrelevantly hunts for objects beginning with the appropriate letter. The pictures themselves are so full of marvels to discover, that you and any six-year-old can sightsee on equal terms and converse for hours.
