Review:
This DVD of Mozart’s final and perhaps most enigmatic opera is an edited, highlights presentation of a sumptuous, fully staged production of Die Zauberflöte, or The Magic Flute. Sung in the original German, the story is clearly presented by voice-over narration that neither condescends to its youthful audience nor delves too much into the many interpretations that scholars have advanced about this symbol-laden work. Children will come away with an appreciation for the glorious music that Mozart wrote and the overarching tale of good versus evil. Although the story is compressed for ease of understanding, the producers do not lose any of the nuances or parallels of the love story of Tamino and Pamina (the prince and princess) and Papageno and Papagena (the bird catcher and bird lady).

When the curtain comes down on this brilliant work of Mozart’s, be prepared for a commercial pitch to join a DVD collector’s club. That is not to my taste, but with ready access to the STOP button on your remote control, it’s not a big issue either. Children will be captivated by this story, filled with comic characters, captivating woodland creatures and, of course, a magic flute.
