Review:
There is a timeless quality about most of Sendak's stories. The Nutshell Kids, Alligators all Around, and In the Night Kitchen are small entertainments that will wear well in this video format. Max, however, in Where the Wild Things Are, is a classic modern-day hero for the young. Put to bed without supper for an act of mischief, Max uses his anger and his imagination to visit the island with the yellow-eyed monsters. After a wild rumpus with the not-too-scary beasts, Max is ready to return to the real world of mother and mutual forgiveness. Children never tire of this drama, written, and now "performed," especially for them.
